Girl, Moisturize Your Face. I'm Serious.
For the longest time, I hated any kind of lotion or moisturizer. I didn’t like the greasy texture, and I felt like I couldn’t touch anything for half an hour after applying it. Couple that with my oily-teenage complexion, and I felt like I would never need a bottle of moisturizer ever.
As President Trump might say, Bad!
Once I got to college, I began taking my skincare routine much more seriously, and tried my best to incorporate a light moisturizer every other day. Since high-school my skin had evened out, becoming more combination - or so I thought.
While my mom and I were treating ourselves to facials last week, my esthetician surprised me by saying how dry my skin looked under her magnifying lens. It was so dry, she said, she couldn’t even do extractions properly because my skin was so taut. Yikes.
And here I was thinking all my life that you didn’t need to moisturize if your skin was on the oiler or more acne-ridden side.
Although I was surprised, I’m grateful for the wake-up call her words gave me. Your skin’s moisture barrier is no joke, and a well-maintained one can be the difference between a healthy and dewy complexion, or sad and flaky one (which apparently mine was). I also learned that sometimes acne or bumps spring up as your skin’s SOS signal - so don’t take them as meaning you shouldn’t moisturize!
If you think you might be in the same boat as the pre-enlightened me, I’ve got a couple recommendations for affordable moisturizers:
The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors ($5.80 at Sephora)
This one touts itself as being non-greasy, and formulated with all skin types in mind.
Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Moisturizer Pink Grapefruit ($6.67 at Target)
I picked this one up when I was dealing with an especially pesky breakout, and enjoyed how light it is!
Brandless Facial Lotion ($4 at Brandless)
This one’s made with safflower oil, and is cruelty-free!
We’re always looking for recommendations - what’s your favorite moisturizer?
