The Art of the Side-Hustle: 4 Ways Broke College Students Can Start Theirs

There might come a time when working a tiring set of hours at however many jobs, still won’t bring in the funds to fuel your dreams. These are the moments where we need to get to know a new friend: the side-hustle.

No kitschy mug required.

At the end of the day, most of us are exhausted from all of our obligations- whether it be work, school or maybe even the one hour each week you meet a friend for coffee and call it your “social life”. However, if you’re at all like me, your dreams far surpass what your latest pay stub says you can afford. I have ridiculous and wild dreams, but they all require a certain amount of money to bring them to fruition. The time comes when we have to look to other avenues for raising money to bring about our passions and will our dreams into existence.

Keep reading to learn about my go-to ways to bring in a little extra money each month. While this is by no means an exhaustive list, these are just a few ways that are relatively easy, not too time consuming and oh so rewarding!

If you know me at all, you know Poshmark is my favorite. If you have clothes, accessories or shoes that are in good shape, Poshmark can bring in a substantial amount of money. Whether you’re moving or just purging your closet of the all denim outfit that went out with Britney and JT in 2001, then Poshmark could be a good place for you. They do take a cut of the profit, but it is a safe site and guarantees a good customer/seller experience from start to finish. Making an account is free, and you can gain followers by sharing and liking others’ listings. In the past, I have raised over $3,000 dollars getting rid of clothes that just took up space in my closet.

If you love furry friends and have some flexibility in your schedule, I highly suggest signing up for a dog-walking service, like Rover or Wag. You get paid for each walk and if you live in a city, the likelihood of being able to keep busy and build strong relationships with clients is much higher. I have yet to use the service, but I know many people who have managed to turn it into a part-time job!

Sell Your Textbooks

If you’re a college student and have extra textbooks lying around, there are many online sites that allow you to type in the ISBN codes of your books and sell them. They also pay for shipping with a pre-paid label that you can print. I used SellBackYourBooks and received my payment in under three weeks. I made an extra $80 dollars and it was a completely trustworthy service.

Pick Up The Shift (Even if you’re wore-out)

Besides being able to help your workplace and coworkers, picking up shifts is a great way to bring in a little extra money. If you’re exhausted and are losing steam, then maybe you don’t want your dreams as badly as you think you do. If you really want to turn your dreams into a reality, you will have no problem doing everything it takes to get there.

While a side-hustle can add more to your plate, it can help you get where you want to go more quickly. Try something new, dig a little deeper and fight for what you want!
